Submission Guidelines

The Ash is the new literary arts magazine of Ashford University. We seek to publish fearless and inventive poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and visual art or digital media. All submissions should be appropriate for online publication and distribution.

We will publish two online issues per year, in October and April, both of which will be available to the entire Ashford community, as well as the public at large. Submissions are open year round through Submittable.

Contributors to The Ash will see their work published online and archived indefinitely.

To submit, follow the appropriate guidelines and click the link below each genre. You’ll be redirected to Submittable, a submission system that helps you keep track of your submissions. Many, if not most literary journals are now using Submittable for submissions. Once you create an account, you can track all of your submissions to journals using Submittable:

POETRY
Submit up to five poems at a time in a single file. Simultaneous submissions are allowed, but please inform us as soon as possible if any of the poems have been accepted by another journal.

FICTION
Submit up to 7,500 words typed and double spaced. Simultaneous submissions are allowed, but please inform us as soon as possible if the piece has been accepted by another journal.

CREATIVE NONFICTION
Submit up to 7,500 words typed and double spaced. We’re less interested in academic pieces and book reviews than we are in narrative nonfiction and lyrical essays. Simultaneous submissions are allowed, but please inform us as soon as possible if the piece has been accepted by another journal.

ARTWORK
Submit anything you want to share with the Ashford community. Show us your best photography, painting, collage, multi-media, or digital media.
